WINNING CHESS GAMES
If you find that while you enjoy Chess you rarely win a game, perhaps this article is just what the doctor ordered. In this essay, I will attempt to discuss a few pointers to help you start winning Chess games.
- One of the most important pointers is "Plan your moves". I know it is hard to do, but your games must have some theme in your moves if you ever want to start winning games. Your first plan may be develop on the King side, or Queen side. Castling early is another important plan. In short, your first plans are not winning plans, but plans to help you toward that goal. There is nothing worst than moving your pieces aimlessly!
- Look for your opponent's threats. This is another very important pointer. Most of the games I lost were because I failed to see my opponent's threats. It is easy to think about your game and ignore your opponent's moves. Easy, but very dangerous. One bad move could cost you a game you were on the verge of winning. Pay attention when your opponent's Queen is anywhere near your King. You could be on the brink of disaster.
- Yet another pointer is "Be flexible". I often have two or more plans to castle. One may not work out, and then I will have to use another plan. Being flexible will enable you to win more games and be lest stressed out.
- Analyze your games! Not just by yourself, but with someone who can show you what went wrong and how you can do better. Can't find this expert? Try a computer program like Chessmaster. The latest versions (6000 and up) have an analyzer built into them. Read the manual of your Chess program to find out how to use this feature.
- Develop well and control the center. By devolving your pieces to their best squares, you will be able to get your pieces into the action quickly. By controlling the center with pawns and pieces, you will be able to cramp your opponent's game. While you will have plenty of space, your opponent's pieces will be jumbled together and stepping on one another.
- Your must protect your King! "Of course", you say, but it is easy to focus on your attacking plans so much that you neglect the safely of your King. As a rule, castle early. Then be very careful about advancing the pawns in front of your King. Keeping your King in the center of the board is inviting disaster.
If you will follow these pointers, I guarantee you will be more successful at Chess. Perhaps you will be the next Bobby Fischer!
